Wilton Manor Care Home, part of the Sanders Senior Living Group, is celebrating resident Diane and her remarkable lifelong passion for dance, a story that has touched residents, relatives and team members alike.

From learning tap dancing at the age of eight to spending more than six decades dancing with her beloved husband, Sid, dance has always been at the heart of Diane’s life. Her journey has taken her from childhood lessons and ballroom evenings to holidays and dance breaks across the country, creating cherished memories through music and movement.

Recently, Diane’s love of dance shone once again during a music session at Wilton Manor, where she delighted fellow residents and staff by tap dancing with the same enthusiasm that has defined her throughout her life.

Diane first discovered dancing as a young girl, inspired by visits to her Aunt Betty in London and by performances she watched around Birmingham. In the early 1960s, she met her future husband, Sid, and the pair quickly discovered a shared love of dancing. Although they never formally learned ballroom steps at first, they spent countless happy evenings on the dance floor together.

As their family grew, Diane and Sid rekindled their passion for dance in the 1980s, becoming regular attendees at dances in Oadby, Leicestershire, and enjoying holidays and dance breaks where they learned from professional dancers and stars of Strictly Come Dancing.

Their dancing days came to a pause in 2020 due to the pandemic and Sid’s illness. Reflecting on seeing Diane dance today, Sid simply says: “That she still enjoys her dancing.”

For Diane’s family, seeing her dancing again at Wilton Manor has been deeply moving. A recent photograph of Diane happily tap dancing has become a treasured reminder of the joy that dance has brought her throughout her life.

The moment has also been a poignant reminder for the team at Wilton Manor that dementia does not diminish the essence of who a person is. Beneath the illness remains the little girl who chose to learn tap dancing at eight years old and the woman who spent decades dancing with the love of her life.

At Wilton Manor, person-centred care focuses on celebrating every resident’s unique life story, interests and passions, ensuring that meaningful moments like Diane’s continue to enrich daily life within the home.
