With an eye for innovation and a deep appreciation for how architecture shapes lives, Barry Mullen, Architect at Sanders Senior Living, has been instrumental in shaping the company’s vision of redefining care home design across the UK.
Barry’s passion for architecture was inspired early in life. Growing up in a family with a building contracting business, he spent much of his childhood onsite, witnessing firsthand how the synergy between design and construction can transform spaces. “I saw how a well-thought-out design must be paired with strong execution,” Barry explains. “That experience gave me a unique understanding of how architecture impacts people’s daily lives in real, tangible ways.”
Barry joined Sanders Senior Living when it was established in September 2017, and has since played a key role in developing care environments that are both luxurious and functional. When designing care homes, Barry’s approach centres on creating environments that promote comfort, dignity, and independence. His designs focus on spaces that feel truly like home, warm, welcoming, and thoughtfully detailed. Communal areas such as lounges, gardens, activity rooms, and dining spaces are designed to foster social connection, while access to outdoor areas ensures residents can enjoy nature, fresh air, and tranquillity. “Every detail matters,” Barry notes. “From natural light and accessibility to materials and flow, the goal is always to enhance residents’ quality of life and sense of community.”
One of Barry’s most proud moments came with the recent recognition of Beauleigh Court, a Sanders Senior Living development that received an industry award for excellence. “Winning the award is an incredibly humbling and fulfilling achievement,” Barry reflects. “Beauleigh Court was a special project, with its stunning panoramic views and unique site challenges, it required a balance of creativity and precision. The result was a testament to the collaboration, dedication, and craftsmanship of everyone involved, especially Sanders Senior Living in-house construction team, Lasserton.”
Looking ahead, Barry is excited about new developments on the horizon, including a care home scheme launching in Frinton-on-Sea in the new year. “This project will feature modern architectural elements that push boundaries while remaining functional and environmentally responsible,” he shares. “It will incorporate smart systems and energy-efficient materials to create a building that stands out for both its design and sustainability.”
