The Belmont Care Home, part of the Sanders Senior Living, recently celebrated Roald Dahl Day on Friday, the 13th of September, with a special event that brought together residents and children from North Worcester Primary Academy for an unforgettable day of storytelling and fun.
To mark the occasion, one of The Belmont’s very own residents, Tony, took centre stage, transforming into Willy Wonka with his purple jacket and top hat to share two stories he had written for his grandchildren. Titled Helen and Patch – The Swim Away Swan and Helen and Patch – The Wolf Among Sheep, the stories captivated the young audience, with illustrations provided by Tony’s granddaughter. The children, accompanied by two staff members from the academy, gathered in the home’s seating area alongside the residents for this heartwarming storytelling session.
The event didn’t just stop at the stories—children and residents shared conversations, with both generations engaging in lively discussions. Afterward, everyone enjoyed biscuits and drinks, adding a delightful close to the event. The collaboration was not only a chance for Tony to showcase his talents but also an opportunity to strengthen ties between The Belmont and North Worcester Primary Academy, paving the way for future events together.
Carla Sidaway, Customer Relations Manager at The Belmont, expressed her pride in Tony’s achievement:
“This was a perfect opportunity to offer one of our residents time to showcase his wonderful stories. Tony has always been proud of these stories and would often share them with me. Being able to share them with the children made him so proud! The residents commented afterward on how much they enjoyed the conversations with the children, and we look forward to working with the academy again in the very near future!”
Stephanie Howard, Home Manager, also shared her thoughts:
“This was a big moment for Tony. He made these books for his children when they were little and loved reading to them. Despite the challenges Tony faces with his speech after an accident, he was brilliant, and The Belmont family couldn’t be prouder. It was a magical moment for everyone, and we can’t wait to do it again soon.”
Tony, the resident storyteller, said:
“The day was very special, and I thought it was brilliant.”
Scott Holdaway, Outdoor Learning Lead & Pastoral Support at North Worcester Primary Academy, added:
“The children from North Worcester Primary Academy had an absolute blast at the Roald Dahl morning hosted by The Belmont. Tony’s captivating stories sparked laughter, excitement, and a love for reading. We’re so grateful to The Belmont for this wonderful experience!”
This special Roald Dahl Day celebration not only showcased the talent of one of The Belmont’s residents but also fostered meaningful connections between the younger and older generations. The Belmont Care Home looks forward to future collaborations with North Worcester Primary Academy and creating more magical moments for both residents and children.
