Residents at Wilton Manor Care Home, part of the Sanders Senior Living Group, came together to cheer on one of their own this week as resident Betty Sharkey proudly watched her grandson, Liam Sharkey, compete in the prestigious Under-14 Boys’ category at Wimbledon.
The home hosted a special Wimbledon watch party, bringing residents, staff, family members and friends together to celebrate Liam’s incredible achievement. The lounge was transformed with Wimbledon-themed decorations, while guests enjoyed traditional strawberries and cream and refreshing glasses of Pimm’s as they watched the matches unfold.
The celebrations were made even sweeter as Liam secured victory in all of his matches, earning himself a place in the next round of the competition.
For Betty, the occasion was particularly meaningful. A lifelong tennis enthusiast and former member of Hamilton Tennis Club, she has always had a passion for the sport and has inspired generations of her family to pick up a racket. Her love of tennis helped nurture Liam’s own enthusiasm for the game, making his appearance at Wimbledon an especially proud moment for the whole family.
The watch party ensured Betty could share in this milestone surrounded by friends, creating memories while celebrating her grandson’s success. Liam and his father were delighted to know that Betty was able to watch and enjoy every moment of his Wimbledon journey.

“It’s really lovely to watch him and I feel so happy for him.”
Fellow resident and friend Trevor added:
“It’s been wonderful to support Betty’s grandson. It is a real eye opener to watch the younger players, which I wouldn’t normally do. They are the future, and it’s looking good for England.”
